Dr. Rene Petersen

Dr. Petersen is a professor of cardiothoracic surgery and the chief thoracic surgeon at the Department of Cardio-thoracic Surgery at Copenhagen University Hospital.
He is an international expert in minimal invasive thoracic surgery with a personal experience of undertaking more than 1500 VATS anatomical lung resections and thymectomies at his centre, which is leading in Europe with more than 3000 VATS lobectomies and segmentectomies performed overall.
In more than a decade he has led clinical immersions at his centre with participating clinics around the world, and he has proctored many thoracic surgeons in VATS lobectomy by a standardized anterior approach. He has given numerous lectures and educational seminars on VATS lobectomy, performed live surgery and presented at numerous international conferences.
He has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals within the topics: VATS lobectomy, VATS segmentectomy, VATS thymectomy, VATS education and simulation, ERAS program and lung cancer screening.
Dr. Peterson, who has a bachelor’s degree in healthcare management, is also a councillor at ESTS and is on the editorial board and reviewer of several scientific journals.
